Minutes

1. Minutes of the last meeting

The minutes of the last meeting were accepted as a true record.

2. Matters arising from the minutes

2.1 Item 2.3: David C reported that there had been fewer transgressions since he had put reminders on the website and notice board that members should record their scores on the computer even if entering a ‘no return’.

2.2 Item 7.2: Keith confirmed that he had responded to the two people involved in an issue relating to a recent round of the Summer Cup informing them of the Seniors’ committee’s decision. However, an e-mail had been sent to Keith subsequently by one of the members expressing disappointment at the outcome along with a petition signed by 9 members requesting reconsideration of the decision. The Committee discussed the episode again and ratified its original decision, with Keith to inform the person concerned.

3. Finance

Mike gave a brief update, stating that he will provide a detailed report after 31 October:

3.1 Mike asked that any outstanding monies from matches, Monday Clubs etc be paid in as soon as possible.

3.2 Mike reaffirmed that it was expected that there would be a modest overall loss in this financial year due to planned expenditure, reduced income from matches etc. This had been anticipated at the beginning of the year but the seniors’ section financial position is still sound.

4. Monday Club

Brian and David D said that the Monday Club was running smoothly and there was nothing particular to report.

4.1 Rob informed the committee that some members were unhappy with how long they had to wait to tee off in a recent competition. It was on a Bank Holiday. It is a fact that competitions on Bank Holidays have higher numbers of entrants than is normal. Brian and David D will continue to manage tee off times on such occasions as fairly as possible.

4.2 David C mentioned that some members were not happy with the number of qualifiers played in Monday Club competitions from April to September. However, we are required to play 1 Medal and 1 Stableford qualifier from the white tees per month by the Main Club. The only other change has been that 1 Stableford per month played from the yellow tees has been designated a qualifier. The latter will be reviewed after September along with its effect on handicaps.

4.3 David C said that one member had recently asked if he could play in a Monday Club but neither take part in the competition nor pay the Monday Club fee. The Monday Club rules clearly state that all people playing in the Monday Club are required to pay the fee, which is a crucial contributor to the funding of the seniors’ section.

5. Competitions

David C gave an update on the progress of current and future competitions:

5.1 The Aggregate Medal had been won by Neil Harris.

5.2 Winston Jones and John Hilton were planning to play their singles knockout final match on 22 September.

5.3 The current leader in the Summer Cup is Rob Whiteley.

5.4 Alan Ryland leads the Summer Eclectic.

5.5 The newly introduced seniors’ Order of Merit is being led by Phil Rankin.

5.6 The John O’Neill Greensome is to be played on 14 September.

5.7 The Intersection Par 3 competition was played on 18 August. The seniors finished 4th.

5.8 An entry form for the winter pairs knockout is on the notice board and the draw will take place after the final round of the Summer Cup on 28 September.

5.9 David C will be putting up a form for entry to the Winter Memorial Cup in the near future.

6. Prizes/trophies

Paul updated the committee as follows:

6.1 He will organize engraving of trophies and procurement of prizes in time for the seniors’ presentation evening, which Keith is in the process of arranging. Paul will liaise with David C with regards to confirming trophy/prize winners.

6.2 The committee agreed that all Monday Club prize vouchers will continue to be redeemable in the Club’s Pro Shop only.

Any other business

7.1 Keith reported that the Club’s junior section had been revamped but was short of funds. The Main Club had agreed to provide some money to help in its running. It was agreed that the seniors’ section would also make a donation (initially £50) as it is very important for the future of the Club that juniors are encouraged to play here.

7.2 David D stated that an away day at Rufford Park G.C. organized jointly for the seniors’ and ladies’ sections had been very successful. The committee thanks Stuart Murry and Gill Reynolds for arranging it. David D said that people taking part had expressed a keen interest in participating similar events. The committee supported the idea, suggesting it might be easier to organize appropriate dates for them outside the April to September busy time.

7.3 David C said that he would like ‘Memorial Trophy Competitions’ to be placed on the agenda for the next committee meeting. This was agreed.

7.4 David C reported that he is working on making the seniors’ website more interactive e.g. allowing the captain to select and publish teams for friendly matches with other clubs. We need to purchase and subscribe to a computer program/printing facility in order to facilitate this, the annual cost of which is £64. The committee agreed that this is a very worthwhile development in keeping members fully and promptly informed and should be paid for by the seniors’ section. David C is also looking at the practicalities of a system that sends texts to inform and remind people selected to play in matches.

Date of next meeting: 02 October 2017.
